ARTIST STATEMENT

Artist Statement

For me the act of creation is a method of researching an idea that interests me; sometimes it even provides me with answers to my research questions. I immerse myself in the physical and experiential action of the creative process. In this way I distinguish and refine my understandings and expand my comprehension beyond verbal thinking. I act unconsciously, and often only towards the end of the process do I notice the connection between the material, the medium and the idea. This is an unplanned, associative process in which, alternately, I lead, or I am led. I am interested in the systems of ideas, values, and culture that human society creates, and the conflicts those systems produce for the individual. I am interested in how human beings perceive their existence within social space and in the universe. I often use and process my private and specific memories as case studies for examining the cultural context in which I live. I work in a wide range of techniques—painting, carving, weaving, printing and sculpting in clay, in varying formats and sizes, from large canvas paintings to small porcelain sheets. I adapt the technique and the medium to the subject I am researching. Sometimes I combine and assemble several different elements into one work. A frequent theme that emerges in my work is that of fragility and transience in opposition to the prodigious qualities of materiality and time.
